Thierry Henry To Replace Arsene Wenger

The former president of Barcelona believes Arsenal should take a chance on Thierry Henry and appoint him as manager like the Catalan side did with Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola has gone on to become arguably the best manager in the world following a successful playing career at the Nou Camp, and Henry has trodden a similar path.

Joan Laporta, Barcelona president for seven years between 2003 and 2010, sees many similarities between Guardiola and Henry, and believes the Frenchman should be in the frame to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.’

‘The same requirements we were appreciating in Pep Guardiola when we decided to put him as a coach of the first team, Thierry has many of them,’ Laporta told The Telegraph.

‘I know that Thierry loves Arsenal, he loves them. He is a gentleman and a very serious guy, and a very responsible guy.

‘If he wants to become a coach and more specifically wants to coach Arsenal, then it is because he is convinced he will do it very well because he is looking for excellence all the time – just as when he was a player.’

Henry knows Arsenal inside-out after eight years there as a player, scoring 226 goals in 369 appearances, and has since done some coaching alongside Wenger.

Guardiola, meanwhile, had the first 13 years of his professional career at Barcelona and was in a similar position to Henry.

The Spaniard made 366 appearances for the Nou Camp side – incredibly just three fewer than Henry – before returning as coach seven years later.

Of Henry, Laporta continued: ‘He knows football, as one of the best players in the world. These kinds of people, like Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff, they know very well football.

‘They don’t need the extended period maybe that other coaches need to be a great coach. He knows Arsenal, the supporters, the club and he’s a guy that deserves everything he would like to achieve. I believe he could be a very good coach. For him, with his reputation, it’s not acceptable to fail.’

That final sentence, perhaps, is one reason Henry would not be willing to take over at the Emirates. It has been a rocky road for Wenger of late, and there will be much scrutiny on the new manager, whoever and whenever they arrive.

Henry is currently assistant manager of the Belgian national team, alongside Roberto Martinez, but is likely to get to the point where he will be looking for a club role.

If he were to go in for the Arsenal role, further similarities would of course be made with Guardiola, who has created an extremely high benchmark.

At Barcelona, the Catalan manager won two Champions League trophies, three La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys and three Spanish Super Cups.
